If you have been anywhere near aesthetics content lately, you will have noticed a shift. The conversation has moved away from filling and plumping, and towards something rather more interesting: getting the skin to rebuild itself. That is the world of collagen biostimulators, and Julaine is one of the most talked about products in it. Here is everything you need to know.
First, what actually is a collagen biostimulator?
Most people are familiar with dermal filler. You inject a gel, usually hyaluronic acid, and it adds volume immediately. You walk out of the clinic and the change is already there.
A collagen biostimulator does something fundamentally different. It does not add volume itself. Instead, it prompts your body to produce its own collagen, the structural protein responsible for firmness, elasticity and that bouncy quality skin loses over time.
So the result is not something we have placed in your face. It is your own tissue, built by your own body, which is why it looks so natural and why it takes a little patience to appear.
Think of it less as filling a gap, and more as rebuilding the scaffolding underneath.
So what is Julaine?
Julaine is a next-generation collagen biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid, usually shortened to PLLA. It is manufactured in Sweden by Nordberg Medical.
PLLA is not new to medicine. It has been used safely for decades in things like dissolvable surgical stitches and orthopaedic pins, which is part of why it has such a well established safety profile.
What is new is how Julaine is made. Nordberg use a proprietary process called LaSynPro, which produces PLLA microspheres that are far more uniform in size and shape than those in older biostimulators.
That sounds like a small technical detail. It is not. It is the whole point.
Julaine vs Sculptra: what is the actual difference?
This is the question we are asked most, and it is a fair one, because both products are PLLA based.
The differences come down to three things.
Particle uniformity. Julaine's microspheres are smaller and more consistently sized. In practice, evenly sized particles spread more predictably through the tissue, which is designed to reduce the clumping that can occasionally lead to small palpable lumps with older PLLA formulations.
Mechanism. Julaine is designed to stimulate Type I collagen through direct fibroblast activation. Older PLLA products tend to rely more on the body's inflammatory response to the product. Same end goal, different route to get there.
Aftercare. This is the one clients notice. Sculptra traditionally requires the "5-5-5" massage protocol, five minutes, five times a day, for five days. Julaine does not require any post-treatment massage at all.
If you have ever half-heartedly massaged your own cheeks in a supermarket car park because you forgot to do it at lunchtime, you will understand why this matters.
What can Julaine treat?
Julaine is used to improve skin firmness, texture and structural support. The most commonly treated areas are:
Cheeks and mid-face. Collagen loss here causes a flattening of the contours and a general tired look. Julaine rebuilds support from within rather than filling from outside, so you get firmness without the overfilled appearance.
Jawline and lower face. One of the most appreciated results. Rebuilding collagen along the jawline helps restore definition that softens with age.
Neck. An area that ages quickly and gets treated far too rarely. Crepey texture and laxity can respond well, though the skin here is thinner and needs a careful approach.
Décolletage. Years of sun exposure show up here first. Collagen stimulation can improve texture and resilience in an area that is notoriously difficult to treat.
Hands. In selected cases, to improve skin quality where thinning has made veins and tendons more prominent.
Who is it for?
Julaine suits a wide range of people, but what it delivers changes depending on where you are starting from.
In your thirties, it works beautifully as a preventative investment. Collagen decline has begun but has not become obvious yet, so you are getting ahead of it rather than chasing it. Expect a subtle but real improvement in firmness and radiance.
In your forties, this is often where Julaine is at its most impressive. Firmness loss is visible, but the skin still has strong regenerative capacity, so it responds enthusiastically to biostimulation.
In your fifties and beyond, it still delivers meaningful improvement, though it often works best as part of a combined plan alongside other treatments. We will talk this through properly at consultation.
If you have lost weight on GLP-1 medication, such as Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic, and your face is looking a little deflated, Julaine is particularly worth discussing. Because it rebuilds structure rather than simply replacing volume, it addresses the underlying issue rather than papering over it.
What to expect on the day
The treatment takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Julaine is injected in a grid-like pattern to distribute it evenly through the treatment area.
Afterwards, you might have some mild redness, small bumps at the injection points, and occasionally a little bruising. This usually settles within one to three days. There is no massage protocol to follow and no significant downtime.
When will I see results?
This is the part that requires a little faith.
Most people notice an initial radiance and improvement in skin quality at around four to six weeks. The real firmness improvement builds progressively over three to six months as new collagen is laid down.
It is a slow reveal, and that is precisely why it looks so natural. Nobody wakes up one morning looking suddenly different. The change arrives at the pace your own biology sets.
A typical course is two to three sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Results from a full course commonly last somewhere in the region of 12 to 24 months, though natural ageing carries on regardless, so a maintenance session is usually recommended in time.
How does it compare to Profhilo?
They are not really competitors, they are teammates.
Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid bio-remodeller. Its primary job is hydration and surface-level skin quality. Julaine is building deeper structural collagen. Many clients end up having both, because they solve different problems.
The same applies to filler. Filler restores volume in a specific place. Julaine improves the quality and firmness of the skin overall. Used well together, they are a powerful combination.
Who is not suitable?
Julaine is not appropriate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if there is active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, if you have a known allergy to any component, or if you have certain autoimmune conditions affecting connective tissue.
It is also not the right choice if what you actually want is an immediate, visible change. If you have an event in three weeks, this is not your treatment. Suitability is always assessed properly at consultation.
Is it safe?
Julaine has a good safety profile, helped by the long history of PLLA in medicine and by the uniform microspheres reducing the aggregation associated with lumps in older formulations.
That said, as with every injectable treatment, the single biggest safety factor is who is holding the needle. Biostimulators require a different skill set from filler. The assessment, the technique and the product placement are all different, and not every injector who offers filler has trained specifically in biostimulation.
Ask your practitioner directly about their experience with biostimulators. Any good one will be pleased you asked.
